Benefits of Staying Home

I have always been a bit of an optimist at heart and I always try to see the “silver linings” in whatever situations may occur in life.  This time of global crisis can be daunting, but for me there has been one shining beacon of hope and light that I have been able to hold on to – my home.

My oldest daughter was a senior this year and in every way was your typical teenager – she had a pivotal role in her high school musical, held down a part time job working at Panera Bread and in general loved being out with her friends and peers. As a dad, I've had the pleasure of watching her growing towards adulthood, preparing to leave the nest.  That all came to a screeching halt mid-March and after one performance of their musical, life pretty much got cancelled for my daughter a true social butterfly. No school, no hanging out, no work, just – home. 

She is resilient and has bounced back beautifully, as I knew she would.  What is the lesson I had reinforced from this? Home can be a place of security, a place of healing, a place of inner strength. I am so blessed that I have been able to spend the past two and a half months in the place I love the most with the people I love the most. Every single night all five of us in my family are together to share a meal, to do a puzzle, to work in the garden or just to lay around and watch a movie. It’s been wonderful creating memories that will last. Life will continue, my daughter will be moving on to college this fall and she won’t be here. However, her spirit will linger here and I will recall the time spent this spring being together – at home.
